Readers may recall that Obiter issued a challenge to readers two weeks ago to show the Ministry of Justice how it could have saved itself £26,000 just by getting a lawyer to design its Supreme Court emblem (above). We are now pleased to announce a lucky winner: Shaheen Hussain of Reiss Solicitors in Bradford. Not only did she submit a design (see image) that we feel compared well with the more expensive version, she also came up with some judicious (sic) prose to complement it. The circle represents the Earth, and the British Isles are, indeed, on the Earth. Shaheen claims that Wales was aggrieved by the Supreme Court’s real emblem because, rather than a fiery dragon or at least a whole leek, it is represented by just a few limp, green vegetable leaves. So in her design, four triangles represent England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, while the dove symbolises peace. The scales of justice dangling from each wing speak for themselves we hope.
Well done, Shaheen – a Gazette mug and laptop bag will be making its way to you soon.
