On the subject of semantics, a group of international law experts has claimed that the use of ‘unclear language’ by lawyers and other professionals was to blame for the recent economic meltdown. Clarity, the association of lawyers, judges and lay people which promotes the use of plain legal language, said that ‘one of the main reasons for the global financial crisis was the use of unclear language’, adding that ‘financial documents are so complex that even experts have trouble understanding them’. And there we were thinking it was greedy bankers that were to blame.
