London has the fastest growing ageing population in the UK, so Age UK London’s work to ensure that older Londoners’ voices are heard is needed now more than ever. We are the only charity that campaign on behalf of older people living in London and our work covers many issues from accessible and affordable travel, poverty speaking up for people on low incomes, digital exclusion, and public toilet provision.
Our latest research shows that over half, or one in two older Londoners, have experienced ageism in their daily lives and 13% said it was often or always. Older Londoners also shared how ageism makes them feel. The two most common feelings associated with ageism were feeling devalued (36%) and being frustrated (32%) at how they were being treated. A quarter of people said that ageism makes them feel disempowered, for example when it comes to technology and calling ageism out. Our London Against Ageism campaign was launched to raise awareness about ageism and how this affects the older people living in the city.
We want to change this and ensure that London’s decision makers consider both the needs of older Londoners and the contribution they make to the city, taking action to create an age-friendly city that celebrates its older citizens.
Leaving a legacy to Age UK London will help us continue to campaign on behalf of older Londoners on all the issues that matter to them and call on decision makers to listen to what they say.
