Irwin Mitchell has recruited partner Laura Weir to its medical negligence practice in Cardiff.
Weir, who trained at Irwin Mitchell, joins the firm from Lanyon Bowdler. She specialises in complex clinical negligence claims, particularly those arising from failures in maternity care. A fluent Welsh speaker, she has a deep understanding of the Welsh healthcare system and will work closely with clients across Wales and the border regions.
Weir had a leading role in progressing claims arising from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust maternity scandal – the largest maternity scandal in NHS history – and has already secured admissions of liability in a number of cases.
She also played a key role in developing an innovative pilot scheme alongside NHS Resolution designed to manage the large volume of maternity claims arising from the Trust in a more efficient way, and to help families achieve timely access to justice. Alongside her casework, Weir is a strong advocate for safer maternity care and regularly supports campaigning activity.
