Afghanistan's first ever bar association was signed into law last week by President Hamid Karai.
It is the culmination of work by the International Bar Association's (IBA) Human Rights Institute, supported by a grant from the Swedish Foreign Ministry.
Dr Phillip Tahmindjis, the IBA programme lawyer managing the project, said: 'We have worked closely with the Afghan Ministry of Justice for the past three years to establish the basis of a non-political, independent association which will both protect and advance the legal profession and also promote the rule of law in Afghanistan.
'It is a big step forward in re-establishing the justice system in Afghanistan.'
