I would like to express my wholehearted support for the article by Jacqueline Laing (see [2004] Gazette, 25 November, 12).
At last someone is showing up the Mental Incapacity Bill for what it is - an attack on some of the most vulnerable in our society and allowing euthanasia in by the back door.
As lawyers, we should be at the forefront of the battle to protect the weak, not joining in the headlong rush to deny them the voice and protection they both need and deserve. I am ashamed that the society that exists to represent what is still, for all its faults, an honourable profession, gives credence and support to such a disgraceful piece of proposed legislation. Is it too much to hope that, even now, the Law Society will reconsider its position and speak up for those in need?
