City firm Barlow Lyde & Gilbert (BLG) breached the advertising code for truthfulness and protection of privacy in an advertisement published in The Times in May 2006, the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has ruled after receiving an anonymous complaint. The advertisement mentioned more than 250 general counsel by name and suggested that they contact the firm if they wanted their 'name kept out of the legal pages', prompting complaints to the firm from Barclays, Rio Tinto and BP (see (2006) Gazette, 11 May, 1). The ASA said the advertisement could lead readers to draw the inference that the in-house lawyers were involved in litigation, and said BLG should have sought permission before using their names. A BLG spokesman said it was disappointed by the result.
