Campbell Hooper brings in first team-related bonusesCORE VALUES: Allen & Overy judges salary against six criteriaLondon firm Campbell Hooper cast off its lockstep system this week and introduced what it maintains is the first merit-based bonus system for all fee-earners based on team results.Meanwhile, City giant Allen & Overy has unveiled six core values against which individual fee-earners salary levels will be judged.Fee-earners bonuses at Campbell Hooper 10% of salary are to be awarded on the basis of four criteria: billing targets for departments and teams, individual billing targets, and fee-earners non-financial contributions to know-how and to client care.Martin Wright, head of corporate and former managing partner, becomes the firms chairman, and practice management head Jeremy Dutton formerly a partner at City firm Dechert and head of litigation at Hilton group has been made a partner and chief executive.Mr Dutton explained that thecorporate re-think came following a benchmarking exercise carried out over several weeks late last year with two other law firms, including one from the magic circle.A recruitment consultant from one of the largest consultancies said he had never heard of a team-related bonus, adding: Ive heard of it in a sales environment.

It seems to be a fairly balanced system.Allen & Overy has established the six core values for its non-partner fee earners following lengthy internal consultation over much of the past year, carried out by International Survey Research. The values are: excellence in everyone and everything; dedication to clients; helping our people to achieve their potential; respecting and involving all people; working together, and entrepreneurial spirit and energy.Although the firms blanket 16% bonus scheme for all staff is unaffected by the consultation, a spokesman said that individual salaries would depend on how well fee-earners abided by the values.Jeremy Fleming
