It is ironic that the American Bar Association (ABA) research into discrimination faced by black women should refer to the women as 'women of colour' (see (2006) Gazette, 17 August, 8).



It appears that the ABA does not appreciate that white is a colour as much as black. By referring to black people as being 'of colour' suggests that white is the norm and other racial groups should be defined by reference to this norm. Given this suggestion, what hope does the US legal profession have of dealing with racism?



However, the Gazette should be commended for its awareness, having quoted the phrase in inverted commas.
