The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) last week dropped its case against former Law Society President Robert Sayer.
Mr Sayer faced four charges relating to creating and using a false identity and passport to make a complaint against former Vice-President Kamlesh Bahl to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.
A CPS spokesman said it had been discontinued on public interest grounds following medical reports received from Mr Sayer's solicitor - Roy Morgan of Cardiff firm Morgans - and also an independent medical report on his mental state.
Mr Morgan said the latter found that while Mr Sayer - president in 1999/2000 - was fit to plead on a basic level, he was unable to give detailed instructions. He added that Mr Sayer had been unable to recover while the case was ongoing.
Mr Sayer is effectively on sick leave from his west London practice, which is being managed by his partner and staff. The Law Society has been monitoring the situation, Mr Morgan added, which a Regulation Board spokesman confirmed.
