A Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutor is suing the service for more than £100,000 for race discrimination.
Uma Bhardwaj said she was 'shocked and humiliated' to have been offered a 'trainee grade' prosecution role by the service in 2004, despite having 17 years' experience in criminal law.
Although she has now been promoted to a more senior level, she also claims that white male prosecutors on the same level are earning 'substantially more'.
Ms Bhardwaj's solicitor, Shah Qureshi, head of employment at London firm Webster Dixon, claimed that 2004 recruitment figures obtained from the CPS indicated that discrimination had taken place.
He said Ms Bhardwaj was claiming £35,000 in damages for losses to date, with a further £15,000 per annum up until retirement. A CPS spokeswoman said it could not comment on ongoing proceedings.
