Criminal law committee seeks new members

The Law Society's criminal law committee has approximately 20 members who are experienced defence practitioners, senior prosecutors, justice's clerks, an academic and a district judge.

Several members also sit as recorders.

The committee meets every six weeks, usually for a full day, and provides a collective steer on Society policy on legislative and procedural reform.

Members are expected to participate in the debates and to be able to work on the committee's behalf outside meetings, particularly when it comes to drafting responses on consultation documents and liaising with the government where necessary.

Expenses are paid.

There are currently two vacancies on the committee and likely vacancies on sub-groups dealing with specific issues.

Applications are welcomed from experienced solicitors working within the criminal justice system, particularly with defence specialisms in youth justice, prison law, mental health or human rights.

Applications from ethnic minority defence practitioners are particularly welcome. Please send a covering letter and CV to Sophy Thomas, secretary to the Criminal Law Committee, Law Society, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL by 16 July.
