The turnout for the Law Society's recent postal ballot was about 12% (see [2005] Gazette, 15 September, 4). If it really did cost anything like £100,000, there has to be a better way of achieving value for the money spent, while preserving democracy.
Perhaps the time has come for a review of the rules about how a postal ballot may be triggered. For instance, a larger number might be needed to support the request. In these days of instant communication, the time allowed to 'sign up' need not be long, following an initial notice.
We should try to ensure that democracy is available when enough members believe the issue warrants it, but minimise the expense in doing so.
