We are as a profession being subjected to yet further 'watering down' of professional standards.
We get proposals put forward such as paying commission for introductions and avoiding the necessity for a proper educational system to provide the background to a solicitor's practice. The excuse is that the entry to the profession must be widened to embrace non-academic entrants.
One wonders whether, in due course, it will be just sufficient for a person to attend at a solicitor's office under the supervision of a solicitor for a limited time to take what might be called a 'practical test', which tests the knowledge of the applicant with the running of a solicitor's office and ability to work in a legal atmosphere.
