City law firm Stephenson Harwood advised the government of Greece on its successful campaign to reclaim a 'Brutus Coin', a rare silver piece minted in Greece in 42 BC when Brutus, in exile, was the self-proclaimed Roman Emperor after his role in assassinating Julius Caesar. Two Greek nationals had sold the coin to a London dealer after illegally excavating it. This was the first time an EU directive on the return of cultural objects removed unlawfully from a member state has been used since it was passed into UK law in 1994.
