Firm starts WTC trust

A charitable trust set up by City firm Allen & Overy, in the wake of the 11 September terrorist attacks on America, will shortly consider applications made for grants by bereaved families.The World Trade Centre Disaster fund was set up by Allen & Overy's trusts department shortly after the attacks.

The firm was asked to do the work by Bank of England governor Sir Edward George and Lord Levene of Portsoken.The trust - which is believed to have raised several million pounds - will be distributed among bereaved families for educational objectives, including providing funds for undergraduates to study in the UK.There are two weeks remaining for applications to be made for funds.Meanwhile, Reading firm Boyes Turner has set up a trust in memory of a victim of the attacks.

The tax planning group, headed by Ashley Wilkin, created the trust for financial journalist Oliver Bennett - who died in the attacks - on behalf of his parents.

The trust - which was setup to help enthusiastic young people to get a start in their careers - was registered by the firm in time for a memorial service, held this week in memory of Mr Bennett at Wycombe wanderers football club.
