Whitehall lawyers will not be forced to relocate as part of the government’s plans to make the civil service less London-centric, the head of the Government Legal Department (GLD) has told the Gazette.
The Cabinet Office announced in May that 102 Petty France, home to the GLD, Ministry of Justice, Crown Prosecution Service and Law Commission, will close for good as part of a ‘Plan for London’. The government wants 50% of UK-based senior civil servants to be based in the English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland by 2030.
Speaking to the Gazette last week at Petty France, GLD chief Susanna McGibbon said: ‘We’re maintaining a legal presence in central London as part of the Whitehall Campus Programme. The idea is that the civil service will reduce the number of buildings it is in. But we have secured space for as much as we need based on current numbers.’
London-based lawyers will move to buildings in King Charles Street and Government Offices Great George Street in 2028.
The GLD is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
