A former student at the College of Law (CoL) in London is to take legal action to recover almost £5,000 in tuition fees, the Gazette learnt this week.

Nasereena Khan withdrew from a legal practice course (LPC) at the college after just one week because of 'personal problems'. She had already paid almost £5,000 in fees but says the college refused a refund.

CoL chief executive Nigel Savage said Ms Khan had not qualified for its hardship or illness provisions and declined to defer the course and have the fees held over. 'We couldn't fill the space she had left on her LPC at that late stage and so her fellow students would have been subsidising her if we'd returned the fees. She studied law and should know that a contract is a contract.'

Her solicitor Louise Coleman could not comment at this time.
