I read Alister Cryan's letter with great sympathy and endorse much of what he says (see [2004] Gazette, 2 September, 16).
Despite the protestations of the Legal Services Commission (LSC), those of us working in housing law know full well that there is a crisis in the provision of housing advice.
As Mr Cryan says, low rates of remuneration and LSC bureaucracy are driving out experienced practitioners, while there are few of the next generation taking their places.
Having said that, I remain inspired by the dedication of those working in housing law, who still turn up in numbers to evening meetings of the Housing Law Practitioners Association, despite the challenges of the working day.
Andrew Brookes, chairman of the Housing Law Practitioners Association, London
