Solicitors working in-house are more than twice as likely to be satisfied with their pay levels than those in private practice - but they feel let down by a lack of career progression, research has revealed.

A Law Society report published last month found that 58% of lawyers in the employed sector were highly satisfied with their pay, compared to 24% of private practice solicitors.

However, some 38% of lawyers said they were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their career development - as opposed to just 15% of solicitors in private practice.

Carol Williams, chairwoman of the Law Society’s Commerce & Industry Group, said: ‘As a lot of in-house departments are quite small, you end up with a log-jam at the top. You can offer lawyers training in non-law areas but there comes a time where they have to move to another company in order to get on.’
