Law Society squashed

The sporting ideal is admirably strong at the Law Society Squash Club, Obiter is happy to report, where the taking part is very much what counts.

That is just as well, sadly, for the main purpose of the club - somewhat diminished of late - appears to be offering itself up as a sacrifice to racquet-wielding devils from East Sheen in south London.

The annual match against the East Sheen Lawn Tennis and Squash Club is the only one the Law Society team now organises on a regular basis, and this year led to a 5-0 drubbing.

'The success of the evening was undoubted,' says club chairman Giles Stimson, an in-house lawyer at the Financial Services Authority, 'but regrettably is not measured by the results.' Mr Stimson, Paul Marchand of White & Case, Glen Russell of SJ Berwin and Peter Turner Kerr of Olswang all went down gallantly - Mr Turner Kerr losing 9-5 in the deciding game - while newcomer Simon Flann of Theodore Goodard lost in straight sets to the appealingly named Beverley Bunn.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and note that the gender gap isn't that large in squash.
