Lawyer in the news
Who? Charles Law, 46-year-old partner in the technology, media and telecoms practice of City firm Denton Wilde Sapte. Why is he in the news? Represents all ten 'Pop Idol' finalists, including winner Will Young, who is currently number one in the charts with the double A-side single 'Evergreen' and 'Anything is possible'.Background: LLB from Birmingham University 1974-77, followed by Law Society finals with the College of Law at Lancaster Gate in London during 1978.
He qualified in 1980 with Amery-Parkes and left six months after qualification to join the in-house department of EMI records.
In 1987 he became manager of legal services for Hertz Europe, and in 1989 joined Harbottle & Lewis as a solicitor, later becoming partner.
He moved to Denton Wilde Sapte in May 2001 as a partner.Route to the case: 'I was asked to take part in a beauty parade with five other lawyers in December last year.'Thoughts on the case: 'I'm advising Will in three main areas - firstly, looking over artists' management company 19's shoulder to ensure its keeping him in the know as everything is happening so quickly.
Secondly, I'm working on Will's merchandising contract with 19; and on behalf of all ten finalists, I'm negotiating the contracts for the upcoming stadium tour and their future big band album.
The final ten contestants were all asked to sign an agreement saying that 19 has the option to sign any of them for three months after the series ended.
Although I didn't vote in the final, I had my own favourites, and managed to go to a couple of live recordings of the show.
I even had to tape it when I was out of the house one weekend.'Dealing with the media: 'Media relations for the finalists and building Will's profile is all being handled by 19 Management, which has the expertise in this area.
It makes doing my job much easier, as dealing with the press with such high profile clients would be very time-consuming.
Some solicitors naturally lean towards media management, but if I wanted to deal with that side of things I would have gone into artist management.'
