Revenues for the UK’s legal sector fell 12% to £4.68bn in August - but were 12.4% up on the same month last year, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data out today. In August 2025, revenues for the sector were £4.10 billion.

The UK economy as a whole grew by 0.7% in the three months to the end of August.

Legal services sit within the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector, which was the highest-performing service group overall, growing 2.8% in the three-month period.

Julie Norris, legal services regulatory partner at London firm Kingsley Napley, said latest figures were not a cause for concern. ‘August is of course always a quieter month due to holiday season so we should not overinterpret today’s figures.

‘Typically, the legal industry performs strongly compared to other segments of the economy, but it is not immune to global and local economic drivers.

‘With the Iran situation impacting international trade and a UK budget on the horizon, business sentiment remains subdued. Firm leaders must therefore continue to be vigilant in their business planning.’
