The Law Society says the reason it only admits new solicitors on two dates each month 'is that it would not be feasible to expect the Master of the Rolls to process a daily workload' (see [2005] Gazette, 27 October, 16).

That implies that it is legally necessary for the Master of the Rolls to sign each certificate of admission on the day it takes effect. I know of no authority for that proposition, and I would be surprised if that is the practice.

I suggest the Master of the Rolls be invited to sign certificates in batches, with each dated on the day it comes into effect. Trainees could then be admitted on the day they qualify.
