A Merseyside law centre is considering seeking a judicial review of Liverpool City Council's decision to make swingeing funding cuts, in a group action with other voluntary sector organisations.

Vauxhall Community Law Centre lost £73,000 of funding following the council's decision to slash its grant by 60%. Nearby, Liverpool 8 Law Centre suffered a £30,000 cut.


The Vauxhall centre's appeal against the council's decision was rejected earlier this month, and it is now contemplating legal action together with organisations such as Vauxhall Neighbourhood Council, and North Liverpool Citizens Advice Bureau.


Steve Hynes, director of the Law Centres Federation, said: 'The cutbacks prove the point that the current system of legal services with its uneven spread ultimately denies access to justice.'


A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said: 'The city still has a wide range of legal services available to the public.
