I read last week's letter 'cheap labour' with interest (see [2008] Gazette, 29 May, 11). There is undoubtedly an issue with regard to employees within the same organisation being paid differently to staff in similar roles. I do not think that it is contentious to say that this problem is certainly not limited to the legal profession. Similarly, I do not think this problem is limited to race or gender, but when such inferences can be drawn the story has more interest and the public hears more about it.
Within my firm there is a female employee who is paid considerably more than her equivalent colleagues. This is despite her performance being notably worse.
Sometimes life is just not fair and this appears to be reflected in salaries, just as much as any other aspect of life.
