The Law Society Council last week indicated that a representative council delegating day-to-day decisions to an executive committee is its preferred governance model for the future. Other options on the table at a special meeting were to combine both representation and governance functions within a single small body, or to have a large democratic forum operating alongside a smaller governing body. On the question of its future size, most council members believed that the time was not right to take a decision without further analysis of its relationship with the subsidiary boards and committees. Of those who did express a preference, a council with 71-80 members was the favoured size. The issue is expected to be considered further at this week's council meeting.
