I note that Land Registry fees are to rise from early July by about 30%. Presumably, this is to remedy the lack of income caused by the diminution in the volume of conveyancing work.

The advantages of being a monopoly supplier!

I have noticed that our bigger local estate agents have increased their fees by about 50%. Its customers are assured that the fees to be charged are normal tariff fees and are asked to sign on the dotted line before they have an opportunity to discover there are other firms willing to charge less. Oh, the benefit of being the point of first contact in a transaction.

I do not note that there has been any scope for increasing legal fees, where competition for what work there is remains intense.

The problems of neither having a monopoly nor being the point of first contact.
