MPs have joined the fight to save two law centres from closure, demanding that the government ends the 'legal aid lottery' that denies people access to justice.
Some 28 MPs have signed an early-day motion calling for the Humberside Law Centre and the Vauxhall Community Law and Information Centre in Liverpool to be reprieved (See [2005] Gazette, 10 February, 3).
Austin Mitchell, Labour MP for Great Grimsby and sponsor of the motion, said: 'People are in danger of losing their right to independent legal advice if the fate of these two law centres indicates a national trend.
'What we want is a community legal service built around a national network of law centres. If local authorities cannot fund this, government must.'
A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said a decision on the appeal by the Vauxhall centre against funding cuts will not be given until March - it had been expected last week.
