The Law Society's family law committee is seeking a new member with substantial experience in heavyweight ancillary relief and pension cases, preferably private work, as well as some general knowledge of family law.

An interest in the area of money laundering as it applies to family lawyers would be an advantage.

The family law committee meets six times a year and members are appointed for an initial term of three years.

The committee considers proposals to improve law and procedure and promotes good practice advice to the profession.

The committee also responds to proposals on law reform put forward by the government, the Law Commission, rules committees and other bodies.

It is actively involved in developing initiatives and areas of practice and is currently undertaking major projects to improve the practice of family law.

The members of the committee, as it is currently constituted, include solicitors in private practice who undertake legal aid and private client work, a local government solicitor, a justices' clerk and an academic.

Members deal with cases involving private children law, ancillary relief and domestic violence.

Applications are welcome from all those with the enthusiasm, expertise and the time necessary, irrespective of sex, race, colour, age, sexuality, religion or disability.

The closing date for applications is 5 January 2004.
