Housing law committee - appointment of committee member
The Law Society's housing law committee has a vacancy for a practitioner with expertise in local authority work.
This expertise is important to the committee so that it can represent all areas of interest in the housing field.
Applications are sought from solicitors with at least five years' experience in local authority work who have an active interest in law reform and changes in practice and procedure.
The housing law committee meets six times a year and members are appointed for an initial term of two or three years.
The committee is concerned with improving the law and procedure and in promoting good practice for the profession.
It is proactive in the area of law reform, responding to proposals put forward by the government, the Law Commission, rules committees and other bodies.
The committee is actively involved in developing initiatives and is currently undertaking two major projects to improve the practice of housing law.
Membership of the committee currently consists of solicitors in private practice representing tenants and landlords or both.
Applications are welcome from all irrespective of sex, race, colour, age, sexuality or disability.
Appointment will be based on merit, following an open and clear selection process.
Applications are particularly welcome from solicitors who practise outside London.
For an application pack, contact Philippa Wright at the Law Society on 020 7320 5944; fax: 0207 7320 5673; e-mail philippa.wright@lawsociety.org.uk or write to the Law Society at 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL or DX 56 London/Chancery Lane.

Civil litigation committee - vacancy for committee member
The Law Society is seeking to appoint members to the civil litigation committee.
Members of this specialist committee play a vital role in bringing practical experience to the work of the Society on policy and practice.
The remit of the committee is wide and includes work on monitoring the civil procedure rules, the Human Rights Act, European Union legislation and solicitors' costs.
Responding to consultation papers on reform of law and procedure is a major part of the committee's work.
Applications are now sought from in-house solicitors with experience of working at a senior level in commerce and industry and from commercial litigators, preferably from large corporate practices, with an active interest in law reform and changes in practice and procedure.
The role will be to contribute practical experience at the committee's meetings - which take place six times a year - and to contribute to the work of task forces on specific issues.
Women and people from ethnic minorities are currently under-represented on the committee and therefore are encouraged to apply.
To request an application form and a copy of the appointment criteria, write to Rekha Shah at the Law Society, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL; e-mail rekha.shah@lawsociety.org.uk
