'One in ten' assistant solicitors still moves despite low salariesOne in ten assistant solicitors accepts the lowest salary offer when changing jobs, a survey by recruiters EJ Legal has shown.Director Simon Janion said: 'A large proportion of assistant solicitors mention money when they first come to see us.

Yet they very rarely make their decision based just on money when weighing up offers - unless an offer is very low.'Those who accept the lowest offer do so 'because the firm offers the solution to that candidate's real problem.

This may be simply recognition for hard work, or quality of work, a culture change, or the acknowledgement of life outside work being important too.'Candidates surveyed by the firm last November and December found that type of work (28.5%) and partnership prospects (25%) were assistants' main reasons to move, followed by moving to London (11.5%) and culture (9%).

Quality of life (8%) and money (4%) were lower down.

Of partners, 61% cited cultural changes.

Moving to London (15%), type of work (9%), support (8%) and merger (7%) were the other reasons.Neil Rose
