Thames Valley legal giant RWK Goodman is to acquire HMG Law, which is reputed to be Oxfordshire’s oldest law firm. The deal is expected to complete on 31 January.
Staff from HMG Law’s Oxford and Bicester offices will integrate with RWK Goodman’s Oxford office at Minns Business Park from February, 'with ongoing client service to remain unaffected during the merger'. RWK declined to disclose any further information, including on staff numbers involved or potential redundancies.
Private and family law specialist HMG, formerly Herbert Mallam Gowers, can trace its history back to 1838. Founding father Thomas Mallam enrolled as a solicitor in that year and set up practice in Oxford’s Turl Street.

Paul Daniels, managing partner of RWK Goodman, said: 'It is a pleasure to welcome HMG Law to RWK Goodman and further expand our leading capabilities and prominence within the Thames Valley. This marks a strong step in our overall strategic ambition of growing sustainably and at speed by bringing on those who are firmly aligned with our core values and commitment to client quality.’
Gary Baker, senior partner at HMG Law, said: 'HMG Law’s strong reputation for excellence within Oxford and the wider Thames Valley is a perfect fit with RWK Goodman’s commitment to building a sustainable business that supports current and next generation private and business clients in the region. I look forward to working with RWK Goodman to deliver a seamless combination.’
Top 100 firm RWK Goodman was created when Royds Withy King merged with City boutique Goodman Derrick in 2022. The firm is aiming for turnover of £100m by 2030.
Chris Wilson, partner and head of the firm’s private client team in Oxford, said: ’Having worked at HMG Law for over 10 years myself, I know that the two firms are a strong cultural fit. We are bringing in a regionally leading team with strong expertise and connections which truly complements our existing practice.’
