Police warn City firms to prepare for May Day havocRIOT THREAT: firms briefed on common sense precautionsTop City law firms with strong associations with capitalism are to be visited by City of London police to stop anarchists wreaking havoc on May Day.City police have warned law firms in the Square Mile to liaise with them before 1 May which falls on a Tuesday this year and is not a bank holiday for a briefing about common-sense precautions. These include ensuring staff are only admitted using security cards, preventing tailgaters from following staff and visitors into offices, and leaving no back doors open for smokers, a spokesman said.He said firms with a higher public profile, associated with capitalism per se, and perceived to be part of the establishment would receive individual visits from City police. These firms likely to include the magic circle of Linklaters, Freshfields, Clifford Chance, Slaughter and May and Allen & Overy will be asked to delay non-essential meetings, conferences and seminars, to implement a skeleton business day, and arrange for staff to stay on the premises.
If necessary, smokers should be allowed to puff out of the window.Last year the May Day riots centred on Westminster, leaving the City badly affected two years ago largely unscathed.Intelligence this year suggests that demonstrations will focus on the West End, but the spokesman said: We dont know exactly what theyre planning, and we must be careful to avoid disinformation.Jeremy Fleming
