James Carter (see [2009] Gazette, 17 December, 9) misrepresents Resolution as opposing government plans to extend family reporting. In fact, Resolution is fully supportive of greater openness and transparency in the family courts.
Our problem with the government’s proposals is that they pave the way, without proper parliamentary scrutiny, towards the automatic publication of sensitive personal information (medical or psychiatric reports, for example).
Such measures are unlikely to be in the interests of the children and families concerned. Parliament should carefully consider the need to protect individuals and the respective benefits to society before making such a change.
Nicholas Longford, Chair, Resolution
