Solicitors this week welcomed the creation of the Family Justice Council, which the government hopes will help deliver better outcomes for people using the family justice system.

The council will be chaired by Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, president of the family division of the High Court, and meet four times a year. Its 19 members include judges, magistrates, barristers, solicitors and academics, as well as individuals representing consumers.

Key elements of the council's remit include promoting improved interdisciplinary working across the family justice system, identifying and disseminating best practice, and making recommendations on changes to legislation. It will also consult with government departments on policy and priorities.

Solicitors Family Law Association chairwoman Kim Beatson said: 'The council will fill a vital role in bringing together a range of skills and experience to look at how the family justice system can be improved.'
