I read your recent article on networking with a combination of sadness and disbelief (see [2004] Gazette, 18 March, 24).

It says that 'in the cut-and- thrust market for legal services it is never too early to start schmoozing'.

And, 'there is an expectation that solicitors will, in fact, solicit business'.

What distinguishes the modern solicitor from a double- glazing salesman? Only the nature of his wares, it seems.

Both can advertise and, effectively, tout for business.

Surely it is time for the Law Society to abandon the illusion that it represents a profession.

It should change its name to the Solicitors Trade Association, represent its members effectively and, of course, outsource its disciplinary function.
