I read with interest your report about how the internet will soon overtake personal recommendations as a way for people to find a solicitor (see [2009] Gazette, 15 January, 1).
I believe it already has. In 2008, well over 50% of our business came directly from our website and online enquiries. We have always relied heavily on emerging communications technology to run the business efficiently and to interact with clients. This is paying dividends.
People routinely use the internet in their daily lives, so it is only natural that they will now look to it when searching for a solicitor. My concerns would centre on any firm that claims to offer solicitor-managed divorces online, but where an individual has to do most of the work and is not receiving direct, professional advice.
As a family law specialist using an e-commerce model, we are keen to ensure that, while maximising the use of the internet as a tool to improve service, firms do not cut off clients’ direct access to high-quality advice.
