Women solicitors expect high salaries and job satisfaction

Women solicitors expect to earn considerably more than their male colleagues - but despite this they see job fulfilment as more important than salary levels, according to research out this week.

The survey also showed only 17% of women solicitors believe in the existence of a 'glass ceiling', far lower than in accountancy, media, IT/telecoms, and financial services. The survey, produced by Barclays Private Client, questioned 600 'affluentials', professionals earning more than 60,000.

Women lawyers on average expected to earn 235,000 in the future - more than women in other professions and more than the 179,000 earnings expected by male lawyers. But lifestyle and job satisfaction were more important than money to women lawyers.Anthea Grainger, chairwoman of the Association of Women Solicitors, said: 'Income tends to be seen as a measure of success, and women in particular who work at this level of the profession want to be seen to be as successful as men, if not more so.'Victoria MacCallum
