Double congratulations to Birketts’ Jeevan Singh Dhothar, who has not only just qualified as a solicitor but also obtained a GCSE in Punjabi over the summer.
Growing up as a second-generation British Indian, Dhothar never learned to speak his family’s native language and struggled to communicate with his relatives and community as he got older.
Dhothar said he worked hard for his GCSE over two years and wanted something tangible to show for his efforts. Learning Punjabi ‘helped to exercise a different part of my brain’, said Dhothar, who works in Birketts’ administrative and public law disputes team. Dhothar would study in the morning before work and attend classes at his local gurdwara on Sundays, where he was the only mature student. Going back to the exam hall to sit his GCSE felt strange, but ‘made me appreciate the journey’.
