For non glory-hunting football fans subjected to taunts from Manchester United supporters during the 1990s and 2000s, the club’s current predicament provides an endless source of schadenfreude.
The Red Devils may have scraped past Roma in the Champions League this week but have just one Premier League win all season, appear to be riven with player mutinies and are likely to soon maintain the endless cycle of sacking one manager every autumn.
All of which, for the rest of the football world, has been rather fun to watch. And the enjoyment is only heightened by a tone-deaf job advertisement posted this week for a football & commercial lawyer to move to Old Trafford.
The description states from the outset that ‘At Manchester United, we believe that excellence on the pitch starts with excellence off the pitch.’ This on-pitch excellence currently extends to occupying 17th place in the league.
The blurb goes on: ‘Our team thrives in a high-performance environment, united by a shared passion for success. We aim to elevate the standard of performance through collaboration and continuous growth, creating a space where everyone can contribute their best to our common goals.’
We can only assume the reference to this ‘team’ is to the legal team, not the first XI.
