Obiter was once advised that the world’s best photographers were those attached to the Austrian army. Apparently they were trained to pop up, take one perfect shot, then pop back down to safety – which was pretty much the approach taken by Gazette features editor Ed Reyes, who snapped the winning shot for the 2023 London Legal Walk’s photo competition, announced today.

The 17-strong team, pictured on Whitehall, is the legal charity IPSEA, which provides legal advice to support access to education for children with special educational needs.

Led by its chief executive, solicitor Ali Fiddy, IPSEA was likely not the fastest team walking that day, including as it did a walker with a crutch, an easily distracted dog (Molly) and a wheelchair user (Ed’s daughter Amy, pushed by his wife, IPSEA’s policy manager).

But the charity did race into the top six measure by funds raised, further boosted by the £1,000 photo prize provided by the competition’s sponsor, litigation funder Harbour.

The charity’s fundraising manager, Victoria Lewis, told Obiter: ‘We are thrilled to have won! The £1,000 prize will help us to continue providing vital support and advocacy, ensuring children and young people with SEND receive the education they are legally entitled to.’
