The quest for new employment can be a daunting experience. With the current competitive market it is vital you get off to a good start.

Consider the reasons why you want to move. When making your decision remember to be confident and committed. Be aware of the possibility of a counter offer, could this make a difference? Research has shown that, after a counter offer has been accepted, nearly 90% of candidates still leave within 12 months. Therefore, being fully committed will not only improve your chances of success but will also save you time and limit

the potential for missed opportunities.

Consider your options, check your notice period and likely availability date. Increasing numbers of candidates are experiencing the benefits of working as a locum while they search for their ideal permanent position. Many find the flexibility helps them achieve the right work/life balance, while others find their marketability is improved by taking a temporary position in a different area of law or organisation such as in-house or the public sector.

Choosing the right recruitment consultancy cannot be over-emphasised – you may have a good, bad or indifferent view of them, but in the legal marketplace more than 90% of vacancies are filled by recruitment consultancies. There are nearly 20,000 employment agencies in the UK, so it is important you find the right one for you. All reputable consultancies will have a Web site detailing their services, reputation, expertise and any recent awards they have won. Also read the recruitment pages and talk to friends and colleagues for recommendations.

Once you have decided on a consultancy, give it a call; remember your first interview is with the consultants, so be prepared. Consider giving the consultancy an exclusive period before contacting others. This will ensure it channels all its energy into your search, as well as avoiding the possibility of a prospective employer receiving your CV from more than one source.

You will need to provide a CV and covering letter. A good CV and covering letter is punchy, simple, easy to read and memorable. The tone should come across as polite, bright and professional.

When you meet with your consultant, listen and be receptive to feedback and suggestions. Are you thinking long-term and is the package you want realistic and achievable? A good consultant will have close working relationships with their clients, know what they want and what they don’t want and possess comprehensive market knowledge.

Interviews will play a key role in securing the perfect position. Prepare, be on time and impress, but to help with the nerves, remember the interviewer needs to impress you too. Your consultant should discuss potential scenarios and questions arising from your CV prior to any interview, to ensure you are fully prepared.

Finding your perfect position can take time, so don’t make rash decisions. Be patient.
