The definition of a referendum is "A general vote by the electorate on a single political question which has been referred to them for a direct decision". Now the High court are, in effect, telling us that we weren't taking part in a referendum but instead taking part in an "advisory" vote. The Judgment even refers to members of parliament being briefed before passing the Referendum Act that the result would only be advisory. So the conclusion must be it wasn't meant to be a proper referendum. Nice if someone had told us.
