Surely, Anon 8.56, it works the other way, the Referendum Act 2015 should have said, if Thursday's HC decision is correct, "and if the result of the referendum is to leave then HofP must pass a bill authorising PM to activate Art.50". The triggering of Art. 50 is purely procedural and to be taken when the PM deems it appropriate to do so. David Cameron said he would do it immediately and no one at the time said he was wrong.

However, I must add that we 'losers' on Thursday must grin and bear that result however much we may disagree with it. That is how our system works. And if we don't we are giving the 'Remaindermen', the 'Binners', a hostage to fortune should SC decide the other way next month, assuming our economy can keep going with all this uncertainty for that long. These three judges were only doing the job we asked them to do independently of political or other bias. I happen to think they got it wrong. But that does not justify the vilification and vituperation to which they have since been subjected. That is bad enough coming from the gutter press, to hear it from lawyers is ten times worse.

But I think we can all agree on one thing, that this is a right royal, full on, full English, dog's breakfast of a predicament in which we now find ourselves.
