The National Insurance Contributions row rumbles on.

All MPs should consider this -the self-employed sign personal guarantees, they mortgage their houses, they work long hours, and they often don't take holidays, but still they feel passionate about the enterprise culture.

They are the drivers of the economy from the bottom up, and feel betrayed by politicians and civil servants, remote from the coal face of real business, blissfully piling costs onto SMEs.

Social justice has to be paid for, but the government won't achieve this by spiteful and stupid attacks on the self-employed.

What really should concern all self-employed professionals is the symbolism of a Conservative government “starting the journey” towards equalisation of the tax treatment of genuine risk takers, with civil servants with long established gold plated pensions.
