The LPC was never going to be consistent in terms of grades as was the case with the LSFs that I sat in 1991. With the opening up of teaching the LPC to various other organisations and old Polys (I went to one so am not criticizing them!) clearly there was always going to be competition for grades to attract more students which is where the pot of gold is.

I think it good that we have a single exam system again as hopefully there will be one standard and that can only be safely achieved without interpretation by use of a multiple choice exam.

The major criticism is that there is usually never a wrong answer in the interpretation of the law (there are in some things but all lawyers enjoy an argument don't they?!). Hence how can you have one correct answer for a multiple choice question when there could be more than 1 correct answer depending on the facts.

The law is not simple because life isn't - hence written essay-style answers setting out the thought process of an answer is what should continue to be examined not a solicitor qualifying on the basis of sticking a pin in the answer book and getting more right answers than not without knowing the reasons why thy were correct answers.

I wish the SRA would listen and learn but they don't.
