I attended the very same McKenzie Friend course run by barrister Simon Walland as Lord Grayson did. We were in the same class together. It was for three days - a beginners, intermediate and advanced course costing about £500 in total. Although it was well structured, even useful for those wanting to assist someone in family law matters as a McK, it was certainly insufficient training for anyone not already legally trained and who graduated from it successfully to then claim to be some sort of legal expert off the back of it, and it definitely formed no basis for anyone acting as a McKenzie Friend in any other area of law other than the simplest and most straightforward family matters (e.g., helping advise on squabbles about what school a child should attend, what day of the week a parent should drop their child off - that sort of thing). Certainly nothing heavy going like divorce, custody arrangements and certainly not other areas of law either, least of all criminal. I do think that some McK's are making a huge rod for their own back claiming to be more than they really are - or implying that they are.
