Well said, Anon 12 July @ 18:48. And I believe there are rules that restrict or prevent cross-subsidy of other service from the use of fees paid for statutory services. If implemented, this will effectively be a triple tax on death - a person's gross estate on death will have been amassed out of income/assets taxed during their lifetime; inheritance tax is then levied on that gross estate, and now the proposal is to levy probate fees that the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments described as in the nature of a tax that should require the approval of Parliament. Kafkaesque or what?
