No legal aid available, so client had to foot the bill himself to defend criminal proceedings brought following arrest and charge, based on "evidence" that it eventually transpired had not in fact been considered at all, and was found on the approach to Trial simply not to exist. This was an innocent man, a pillar of the community with an unblemished record, who has been financially ruined, not only because of the consequences of the press publicity following his arrest, but more importantly because the Defence Costs Order in such cases is a thing of the past, and he had to sell most of his assets to fund his defence in a case the CPS semed to drag out for as long as possible. There are other options now, such as a misfeasance in public office claim, but sadly no prospect of that being funded. Justice ? Don't make me laugh.
